Tontodonati, if Brazil cost Italy two World Cup wins (in 70 and 94), Italy repaid the favor at least once (in 82) when Brazil fielded perhaps their most brilliant team of all time. (There's no denying Italy had a great team too that year, of course.)

And no doubt Dynamo Kyiv hoped to achieve a win over Fenerbahce, but the Turks held their Ukrainian visitors to a scoreless draw.

Dumb move. 24 just doesn't work for round-robin play followed by a knock-out stage. The worst World Cup ever, from an organizational standpoint, was the 1982 WC, when they expanded from 16 to 24 teams. 16 and 32 are the natural numbers here. 32 is way too many for Europe, but so is 24. 16 is tidy and just right. If England can't qualify as one of the best 16 teams, expanding to 24 is NOT the solution!

In 2004-5 Lyon made it to the final 8 of the Champion's League, going out to PSV Eindhoven in the quarterfinals. They have made it beyond the last 16, in othe words.

A 2-0 defeat against the second best team in Ligue 1 costs Der Zakarian his job? 'Seems a bit premature. The draw with Monaco was hardly a blemish on his record.

His generation had "the right to enjoy seeing its national team win"? What nonsense--even for a politician! So the English, and the Russians, and the Dutch, etc. presumably do _not_ have such a "right"?? Just feel-good, chauvinistic twaddle from the Spanish prime minister.

ajax72, what makes you think English is not my native language? We're not all Bulgarians. Not only is English my native language, but I was formerly (before becoming a university professor) a high school English teacher. My use of the term "chauvinistic" is entirely correct, and my contempt for the Spanish Prime Minister's remarks was (and remains) fully justified. You may wish to make allowances for the foolish remarks he uttered in the excitement of the moment. I tend to expect dignitaries of state to set a good example (of clear reasoning as well as dignified decorum) on those occasions when they are asked to speak on behalf of their nations.

The first goal is likely to be crucial here. If Germany has to open up, the sky will fall on them. On the other hand, if they're in a position to play defensively and close up shop, Spain may be in trouble.
