VIENNA, Jun 16 (SW) - We've reached Day 10 of Euro 2008 and it's crunch time in Group B as Austria and Germany square off in Vienna. SoccerWay keeps you up to date with the latest.
Current score: 0-1 More match information: Here. For updates on Poland-Croatia, click here. Germany are through to the quarters to face Portugal while co-hosts Austria are dumped out with just a point to their name. They hardly played liked the 92nd-ranked side in the world and acquitted themselves nicely. Germany looked rather flat at times and will need a far better performance against Portugal. Minute 90+3: Tim Borowski is on for the final few moments for Germany. Minute 90+2: Frings fires wide in what could be the last chance of the game for either side. Minute 90: Three minutes added on. Minute 89: Action slowing considerably here, but Klose forces a save out of Macho following a flick-on by Frings. Minute 84: Scramble in the area, and Hoffer turns and fires wide. Minute 83: Podolski will be withdrawn for Germany, Oliver Neuville coming on to finish off the game. Minute 82: Another corner by Austria amounts to nothing. Minute 81: Macho is back up now. Minute 79: Macho is clashed into by Klose in the area after going for a loose ball and he is down for a bit. Minute 75: Nice bit of work by Leitgeb to get a shot off in space, but it's deflected out for a corner. This time Ivanschitz takes it and it is cleared. Minute 74: The next corner by Leitgeb leads to a foul by Martin Stranzl on Lehmann. Minute 73: Austria trying their best to push forward now, but the German defense is standing up strong. Corner kick by Ivanschitz is headed over by Kienast, but not before a deflection. Minute 68: Kienast flicks a header toward goal, but it's wide of the target. Minute 67: Final switch for Austria with Harnik replaced by Roman Kienast. The corner for Germany is punched away by Macho. Minute 66: Podolski plays Klose into the area, but his shot is blocked by Pogatetz for a corner kick. Minute 63: Here comes another change for Austria with Aufhauser coming off and Jürgen Säumel coming on. Minute 62: Pogatetz earns a booking for throwing the ball away after the whistle. Or maybe it was for trying to bite it first. Either way, third caution for Austria. Minute 60: First substitution for Germany with Thomas Hitzlsperger coming on for Gomez. Minute 55: Christoph Leitgeb, who started for Austria against Poland, comes on to replace Martin Hiden. POL-CRO update: Croatia have gone in front as Ivan Klasnic scores a fine goal after a cross from Danijel Pranjic. After two kidney transplants, Klasnic is back on target for his country and Poland have a lot of work to do, not to mention needing a lot of help here. Minute 52: Lamm now takes a crack at goal with the left boot, but it lacks some power and goes out for a goal kick. Minute 49: GOAL GERMANY (0-1) MICHAEL BALLACK scores on an absolute scorcher of a free kick! Pure power on the lashing shot from 28 yards and Macho gets caught slightly off his line. What a brilliant strike from the German captain. Minute 48: Austria captain Andreas Ivanschitz makes a hard tackle on Lamm, and earns a booking. Minute 46: Hoffer gets a poor touch to it on a 2-on-1 for Austria and what could have been a great chance goes begging. HALF-TIME: Germany have had the better of the chances, but Austria have defended well for the first 45 minutes, aside from the missed chance early by Gomez. Minute 45+2: Fuchs puts a long ball forward to Hoffer, but Lehmann is able to get there first. Minute 44: Löw has gone to take a seat in between Schweinsteiger and Oliver Bierhoff after greeting German chancellor Angela Merkel, not sure where Hickersberger has retreated to. Minute 41: It appears that both Joachim Löw and Josef Hickersberger have been sent from the technical area. Not sure why Mejuto has done that. He's been shaky from the outset. Minute 39: Much better stuff from Austria now as György Garics and Korkmaz are giving the German defense fits on the right side, but so far they can't break through. Minute 36: Austria's Ümit Korkmaz drives in a cross to the center of the area, but Christian Fuchs' header is over the top. Minute 34: Klose rises to head a Torsten Frings corner toward goal, but it's wide of the target. Austria, though they need to win, have to happy with the scoreline as it stands right now. Minute 31: There is the first booking of the match, and it goes to Austria's Hoffer for a late, studs-up tackle on Michael Ballack. Minute 29: After a flurry of action, things have calmed down a bit here in Vienna. Austria have just one shot so far. Minute 23: Podolski tees up a shot from 25 yards out, and it's a blistering drive that forces a great save from a diving Macho. Minute 21: Laser shot from distance by René Aufhauser forces Lehmann to tip it round for a corner kick. Minute 19: Hoffer squanders a chance. Harnik puts in a good cross, but Hoffer's touch lets him down and the ball gets away to Lehmann. Minute 18: Appeals for penalty for Austria as Hoffer goes down along with Christoph Metzelder, but the whistle stays in hand. Minute 17: Germany have all the possession, but it's scoreless here and also in Klagenfurt between Poland and Croatia. Minute 9: Emanuel Pogatetz tries to shepherd the ball out for a throw-in, but Arne Friedrich gets in and takes the ball, sends in a good cross, but no one is on the other end for Germany. Minute 7: Klose flicks it on for Gomez on an overlap, but the shot is right into the arms of Jürgen Macho. Minute 5: What a miss for Germany! Miroslav Klose does magnificent work to get deep inside the Austrian area, and his cross only needs a touch from Mario Gomez, but the striker completely misses it. Minute 4: Erwin Hoffer sends in the cross intended for Martin Harnik, but Lehmann gathers. Minute 3: Austria are away as the ball squirts forward past the Germany defense, but Jens Lehmann is quick off his line and clears the danger. Kickoff: Manuel Mejuto González of Spain is the referee and he blows his whistle to start the match! Pre-Game: As was the case yesterday, SoccerWay will keep you up to date with all the latest from Poland-Croatia in Klagenfurt right here. Pre-Game: Austria manager Josef Hickersberger makes three changes from the side that drew 1-1 with Poland. Martin Hiden enters in central defense for the suspended Sebastian Prödl, Christian Fuchs plays on the left side of midfield for Christoph Leitgeb, and Erwin Hoffer goes into central attack for Roland Linz. Pre-Game: Following a 2-1 loss to Croatia, Germany make just one change and it's in defense with Marcell Jansen replaced by Arne Friedrich. Philipp Lahm will slot into Jansen's left-back slot with Friedrich playing right-back. Remember, Germany are without Bastian Schweinsteiger who was foolishly sent off in the dying stages against Croatia. Pre-Game: The situation is simple for Germany. If they earn a win or a draw here today, they are through to the quarter-finals to face Portugal. For Austria, it is a bit more complex. They must win the game and have Poland fail to defeat Croatia to ensure qualification. Should Poland win, Austria can still advance with a win over Germany by a larger margin that Poland beats Croatia. |
